New Contract Converter Opens for Paper Mfrs.

HAMILTON, OH | SMART Papers creates a new stand-alone business called SMART Converting with operations slated to begin January 2010 at the company’s Hamilton headquarters.

The new subsidiary will provide full-service contract converting to paper manufacturers, distributors, and large printers in the Midwest, East and northern tier of the US Southeast. Key equipment includes four sheeters and six rewinders for converting uncoated and coated papers. Embossing technologies are also available.

Laird Strand is the new president of SMART Converting and will oversee all operations. He was formerly principal and managing partner of Appleton, WI-based Progressive Converting (Pro-Con), claimed one of the largest paper converting companies in the US.

“SMART Converting offers full service converting capabilities on any kind of coated or uncoated paper—from ultra-premium to value products,” said Strand. “We can also inventory converted sheets and rolls for our customers and deliver product within 24 hours.” Strand can be reached at 612-940-3639.

The new subsidiary will operate separately from SMART Papers, but current employees will benefit from increased employment opportunities at the new company.

SMART Papers manufactures and markets super-premium, FSC-certified, cast-coated and matte-coated papers under its respected Kromekote and Knightkote Matte brands. Both are marketed by Mohawk Fine Papers, one of the largest premium papermakers in the US.
