AIMCAL Offers Nip Roller Workshop & Drives Course

FORT MILL, SC | The Assn. of Industrial Metallizers, Coaters & Laminators (AIMCAL) offers its Converting School February line-up of classes for converters, including a workshop on Nip Rollers and a course on Drives in Web Handling & Converting.
The Nip Roller Workshop is slated for February 16—18 at the Holiday Inn Express in Rochester NY, instructed by Timothy J. Walker and Dr. Kevin A. Cole. The workshop is directed towards technical employees of any level with a need to understand the fundamentals of nipped roller systems. While some engineering theory and equations will be included, the workshop’s goal is to show how theory and experiment lead to practical solutions to common problems. Time dedicated to seminar and lab demonstration time will be evenly split covering the following:
• Nipping system design
• Nip roller pressure
• Wrinkling and lateral control
• Driving and tensioning
• Laminating and curl
The fee is $1,799 with a 10% discount for AIMCAL members; group discounts are also available.
The Drives in Web Handling and Converting Course is scheduled for February 25—26 at the Four Points Hotel Chicago O’Hare in Schiller Park, IL, instructed by Clarence Klassen. The course is intended for electrical/instrumentation maintenance, drive start-up personnel, and junior to intermediate drive systems engineers. Emphasis will be on the practical aspects of drives for winding. A prerequisite is electrical aptitude and some troubleshooting experience. Course subject matter will include the following:
• Selecting a drive for web handling applications
• AC and DC drives
• Load cell versus dancer versus open loop control of tension
• Power requirements (actual versus motor rating)
• Tension loop control block diagrams
• Drive functions for turret winders
• Tuning drives and tension loops
• Troubleshooting tension issues
• Drive safety (guard interlocks and E-Stop)
• Knowing when a project is in trouble
Fee for non-members is $899 (AIMCAL members: $809.10) with group discounts available.
