Amcor Selects Davis-Standard ProPak Die Technology; ProPak to Be Highlighted at Co.'s K 2001 Booth

PAWCATUCK, CT, USA—Amcor Flexibles Europe says its pleased with Davis-Standard's ProPak die technology. According to Davis-Standard, after extensive research of available technologies worldwide, Amcor selected its ProPak system and installed the die technology in late 2000.

"Amcor needed a new coextrusion die design to increase its competitive advantage in the high-quality film market," says Davis-Standard. "So [we] designed a unique 400 mm (15 in.) system to meet Amcor's requirements."

The ProPak technology provides Amcor with performance, versatility, fast purge times, and simplified maintenance, reports the manufacturer. "We don't sell ordinary film," says Amcor. "We sell a functional layer that serves our customer's critical needs. That layer may be EVOH for a barrier, a high VA content EVA for tack, a sealing layer, or a peelable layer. The quality and uniformity of that layer is critical to our customers and is the driving force behind our demanding specifications for machine performance," Amcor adds.

According to Davis-Standard, the ProPak can produce films with critical layers at a four percent variation without the use of an auto-gauging system. The die also features a large IBC (internal bubble cooling) access hole that pumps increased air volumes through the die into the bubble, which, the co. says, makes it possible to attain outputs of 400 to 500 kg/hr (880 to 1100 lbs/hr). Amcor also recently purchased a seven-layer ProPak die for its pilot extrusion facility in Gent, Belgium, reports the co.

Converters and film producers will be able to see ProPak technology in person at K 2001, where the die will be featured at Davis-Standard's booth.
