This webinar on drying gives an overview of the drying of coated webs and of the defects that frequently arise during drying. It starts with the methods of supplying heat during drying, covers the various types of dryers including impingement dryers, flotation dryers and several newer types, discusses constant rate and falling rate drying, compares solvent with aqueous drying, and briefly mentions modeling drying and infra-red and microwave heating. The last section goes into drying defects and how to minimize them, including skinning, non-uniform distribution of binder and pigment, air-blown defects including dryer bands and mottle, air bar rubs, blisters, blushing, blocking, cracking and curling due to drying stresses, starry night, and reticulation.
