FTA Announces Call for Entries for Awards Competition

RONKONKOMA, NY | The Flexographic Technical Assn. (FTA), the world's leading professional society dedicated to advancing the flexographic print process, is now accepting entries for its 2009 Excellence in Flexography Awards Competition.
The competition is open to all printers, suppliers, prepress providers, students, and graphic artists, FTA members, and non-members alike. Entries are broken down into the following categories: wide web, mid web, narrow web, folding carton, napkins, combined corrugated, preprinted linerboard, envelope, newspaper/publications, self-promotion, and student. There is also an opportunity to submit entries for Graphic Design to recognize the quality of package design, an element of packaging that is playing an increasingly important role in flexo printing.
Judging is set to take place Jan. 25-27, 2009, with all winners announced May 3 at the Awards Banquet, to be held during the Foundation of FTA’s Annual Forum & INFO*FLEX Exhibition at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, FL. Judging will be based on the degree of difficulty pertaining to substrate printability, registration tolerances, and fineness of print and/or screen.
Additionally, elements such as image sharpness, ink coverage, and dot/screen/vignette quality will be assessed.
FTA offers a pricing structure that allows one to five entries for $80 each for FTA members, and $160 each for non-members. An additional entry after five is $70.00 each and $140.00 each respectively. The deadline to submit entries is Jan. 16, 2009. Entries must have been created between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2008.

FTA’s 2009 Excellence in Flexography Awards competition is expected to draw more than 600 entries. Those statistics are similar to results for the 2008 competition when 650 print jobs were entered and 147 awards were given out. Of that amount 50 jobs took gold medals, 49 captured a silver, 42 earned a bronze and six special achievement awards were bestowed. Nine entries took Best of Shows in their respective categories.
First started in 1960, the Excellence in Flexography Awards competition recognizes outstanding technical achievement in flexographic printing. Technical achievement is defined as any work that has an extremely high level of execution, or any work that includes the use of techniques, processes, controls, materials, tooling, or equipment that contributes to the advancement of the flexographic printing trade.
