Winterborne Recognized by Wal-Mart for Sustainable Packaging Success

CHATSWORTH, CA | Wal-Mart recently recognized Winterborne, Inc., a complete sustainable packaging and display solutions provider, with an award for EnviroShell, “the first 90% recyclable and recycled clamshell package,” according to the award citation. The award was the first of its type, and Winterborne, a Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club preferred packaging provider, was the only packaging supplier to be recognized.

EnviroShell, invented by Winterborne and first introduced in 2005, features a unique corrugated design with a proprietary seal reportedly allowing it to outperform traditional plastic clamshells and less substantial trapped blister packaging. It is made from 100% recycled PET and a minimum of 70% recycled corrugated.

Compared to traditional clamshells, which it was designed to replace, EnviroShell reduces plastic by up to 90%, according to the company. The majority of the package is highly recyclable; the plastic blister is designed to easily separate, which allows the corrugated portion of the package to be recycled.

Thanks to these qualities, and an energy efficient, full service in-house manufacturing process that slashes transportation costs and holds greenhouse gas production to the minimum, Winterborne customers are said to gain a major sustainability score advantage on the Wal-Mart Scorecard.

One of the first sustainable packages brought to market and with the longest performance record, EnviroShell is widely used by many major brand owners in hardware, electronics, health and beauty, sporting goods and more, Waterbore reports. With several million products in the EnviroShell, it has an established record of significantly increasing consumer sales in both the retail and club warehouse marketplaces.

EnviroShell is described theft resistant, easily and safely opened, and is said to have exceptional longevity for protecting products during shipping, handling, and on the retail shelf. It’s claimed rugged enough to withstand the rigors of a “club” store environment.
