National Starch Realignment Plans for Specialty Starch Production Results in Expansions and Closures

BRIDGEWATER, NJ, USA—National Starch and Chemical Co. reports plans to close one North American and one European starch manufacturing plant , complete a new starch-modification facility in Shanghai, China, "in order to service the emerging Asian market," and invest in three specialty starch manufacturing plans through 2004. According to the company, the plans are part of the manufacturer's redesign of its global specialty starch supply chain.

Manufacturing sites to be included in the company's modernizing process include operations in Indianapolis, IN, USA; North Kansas City, MO, USA; and Hamburg, Germany. Plants to be closed include National Starch's Collingwood, Canada, plant and its Tilbury, U.K., operation.

Says James P. Zallie, sr. VP of the co.'s natural polymers group, "The plant expansions will be designed to provide additional manufacturing flexibility while keeping production costs as low as possible."
