Atlas Converting Equipment Installs Slitter in Portugal

BEDFORD, UK | Atlas Converting Equipment recently commissioned a 4.8-m-wide CW5400 slitter/rewinder at Poligal S.A., Arcos de Valdevez, Portugal. The new line has reportedly enabled Poligal to complement its expanding BOPP film production with high-quality, competitive CPP film for both food and non-food applications.
Poligal (Polipropileno de Galicia S.A.) is part of the privately owned Grup Peralada and has an annual BOPP production of 50,000 tonnes/yr and 12,500 tonnes/yr of CPP (cast polypropylene). The company provides a full range of plastic films for flexible packaging, labels, and lamination for consumer products and a variety of other industrial applications.
The new CW5400 slitter/rewinder now in production at Poligal is a primary film slitter processing CPP film to 4.8 m wide with automatic knife and automatic rewind arm positioning systems. Rewind roll diameters can be up to 1,500 mm and to 5000 kg in weight using wireless combination (HD) rewind arms. Maximum production speed is 1000 mpm with slit widths as narrow as 300 mm if required. The CW5400 also has an external edge trim winding system.
“We are very pleased with the new Atlas CW5400 film slitter,” says José Luis Doldán, chief operational officer of the Group. “Installation and commissioning was completed on time and in line with the startup of the new CPP film line. Together with our new vacuum metallizing line in Arcos, we are now able to develop new industrial applications and to further extend our already wide range of vacuum coated substrates.”
The CW5400 Series slitter/rewinder can operate at speeds to 1,200 mpm with direct-drive web path rollers ensuring optimum web tension for films as thin as 6 micron to 125 micron. Company says it also delivers higher efficiency, increased productivity and reliability, higher quality rewind reels, reduced noise levels and more effective, operator-friendly control systems. Compact design is said to enable a simplified installation, and the on-board HMI control system reduces cable connections to a minimum avoiding the need for under-floor service channels.
In response to significant expansion of business, Poligal commenced BOPP film production in Arcos, Portugal, in 2008 with an 8.2-m wide BOPP film line and an Atlas CW984 primary slitter/rewinder. “Poligal and Atlas have a long standing business relationship covering almost 25 years,” says Doldán.
In 2010 Poligal started slitting and rewinding operations in narrower widths in Arcos to meet growing demand for the flexible packaging sector and the company now has sales offices in France, Germany, Benelux, Italy, Poland, and Mexico. In Q3/2016 Poligal will commence production at a new greenfield site in Poland with an 8.7-m-wide BOPP film extrusion line and a production capacity of 40,000 tonnes/yr.
In other news from Atlas, the company has appointed Unique Sales Corporation as its new agent to represent Titan slitter/rewinders for sales and customer support in Pakistan. Unique Sales Corporation is located in Karachi and has been established in the flexible materials converting industry since 1980.
“For many years Pakistan has been an important market for both Atlas and Titan slitter/rewinders,” says Barrie Homewood, sales and marketing director for Titan. “I am certain that our new collaboration with Unique Sales Corporation will prove to be beneficial to both companies in the future.”
