Soft Box Concept Honored
RICHMOND, VA | Chesapeake Corp. earned runner-up recognition in the cartonboard category at the UK Packaging Awards, sponsored by UK-based Packaging News magazine. Its Glen Moray Classic Gift Set package features a twist on the company's “soft box” concept by combining low-caliper cartonboard around corrugated inner walls.
The package also uses high quality substrates with a textured grain effect and is foil stamped and embossed. An innovative side opening allows the bottle to show through a curved window without requiring cellophane.
One Press Replaces Two
FRANKLIN, WI | Proteus Packaging, a folding carton producer, has become the first US company to purchase a very large format (VLF) Speedmaster XL 145 press from Heidelberg. The six-color press features an in-line coater and has a top speed of 15,000 sheets/hr.
According to Tim Wayman, executive VP and chief operating officer at Proteus, the company expects to replace two older VLF presses with the XL 145, thanks to gains in efficiency expected with the new press. “High performance based on improved production speed and makeready is what will pay for this press,” he says. “We were really impressed during our visit to [Heidelberg's R&D facility in] Germany and left with the confidence that the XL 145 would meet our needs.”
He adds, “Heidelberg's service organization provides the best coverage in the industry.”

Finish Products In-Line
Carton converting system based on RSM and PBO designs allows for in-line finishing of folding cartons, trays, inner frames, and more. A preprinted roll is very accurately re-registered, creased, and die-cut, company reports, and discrete waste partials are securely removed. The discrete blanks then are transferred in register and further processed, for example, in a gluer/folder/sealer, delivered, and stacked.

Manage More Than One Plant
Release 8.6.5 of the Business VantagePoint core business system for corrugated manufacturers now features multiplant warehouse management. This feature enables the accurate tracking of inventory ownership, invoicing, and sales history for units manufactured in different locations but stored in a shared warehouse. Orders manufactured in different plants can be shipped together from the shared warehouse, with the software automatically keeping the history of where the goods originated and adjusting inventory levels and financial transactions in the appropriate software modules.
