TLMI reports 297 entries produced 52 first place, 27 second place, and one Innovator award as well as a Best of Show prize. Here are details on a few of the winners. Visit www.tlmi.com for more details.
Blues Brother's Best
ASL Print FX (formerly ASL Group-All Stick Label Ltd.), Vaughan, ON, Canada, snags the top prize for the Dan Aykroyd Sauvignon Blanc wine label, entered in the Flexography/Letterpress (Color Process-Prime) category. Printed stochastically to enhance print quality, converting requires holographic cold foil, ultraviolet (UV) inks, gold hot stamping, matte/gloss varnish, and raised varnish silkscreen. Supplying the necessary materials are Sun Chemical, Actega, Kurz Transfer Products, and Avery Dennison, Fasson Roll.
Ticket Taker
Smyth Cos. Inc., St. Paul, MN, scores a first place award with The Silver Ticket, an in-pack gaming promotion with a sports event-related theme. Entered in the Coupon category, the ticket is printed UV flexo and thermal inkjet. This coupon needed to withstand the demands of ultra-high-speed label applications. It features special perf patterns on the game piece and fanfold web. Tight release liner is needed to prevent the label from predispensing.
The converter's Herman Joseph's Private Reserve label also wins a first place award.
Mickey's Mark
Germark S.A., Barcelona, Spain, is an international first place winner with its Disney Tattoos, entered in the Flexography (Line & Screen Tone-Non-Prime) category. Because they are in direct contact with skin, these dry tattoos must be tested and approved by the Food & Drug Administration. Participating suppliers include Innovia Films, Technocut, Siegwerk, and MPS. The tattoos are used in a game sold in children's stores.
Additional first place awards are earned for the Danet, Etienne Aigner, Foguera, and Oleura labels.
Formula Won
Multi-Color Corp., Batavia, OH, drives home a first place prize for the Mobil 1 Delvac gravure-printed bottle label, entered in the Non-Pressure-Sensitive-All Processes/Cut & Stack (Color Process-Prime) category. The label is printed using solvent-based inks with a flood solvent varnish. Cylinders are engraved at 200 lpi due to the label's intricate artwork.
Multi-Color is honored with additional first place awards for the J. Leinenkugel Brewing Co., göt2b fat-tastic, Dawn Hôme Essentials, and Schlitz O.M.L. labels.
Innovator Award
Amherst Label Inc., Milford, NH, earns the Innovator Award for Med-Sked Tabs, a medical dosage reminder label that was entered in the Flexography (Line/Non-Prime) category. The converter's challenge: Develop a medical dosage schedule label with no release and create a bond, no adhesive. The tabs must be removable, and the liner must be clear to allow information to be visible. Participating suppliers include International Tape Products, 3 Sigma Corp., Actega WIT, Harper Corp. of America, and Asahi Photoproducts.
Spot On
Australia-based Collotype Labels Intl. Holdings Pty. Ltd. lands an international first place award for The V Spot wine label, entered in the Offset (Color Process-Prime) category. The UV offset-printed labels are run at 53 fpm. Participating suppliers include Kodak, DIC, RotoMetrics, and Avery Dennison.
Collotype brought home additional first place awards for the House of Arras Grand Vintage and Chandon Prestige Cuvee wine and spirit labels.
Gloom Isn't Doom
Labelad Ltd., Makham, ON, Canada, secures a first place award for Boo-Nilla scented votives labels, which are applied to candles. This entry was in the Digital Printing (Household Goods) category. As part of the Halloween theme, the client did not want the label too bright and cheery but rather dark and gloomy. Converting requires digital printing, off-line die-cutting, four-color process, and varnish at 180-line screen. Suppliers include UPM Raflatac, EskoArtwork, Hewlett Packard, Omega, Sun Chemical, and RotoMetrics.
An additional first place prize is awarded for the Quest Vitamin E label.
Craves Attention
McDowell Label & Screen Printing, Plano, TX, takes a first place award for the Crave bronzing lotion label, entered in the Multi-Process (Color Process-Prime) category. Using three printing processes — high definition UV flexography, foil stamping, and rotary screen printing — the converter faces the challenge of holding very tight register on a highly reflective material. Products are supplied by Ritrama and Actega WIT.
McDowell also takes first place for the Wicked, OC Show Off, Hempz Original Herbal Body Moisturizer, Hempz Pure Herbal Extracts labels, and Medical labels.
