TLMI Awards | Multi-Color Takes 2016 Best of Show

Wine label for Girl & Dragon Malbec fires up the judges in Tag and Label Mfrs. Inst. annual competition.

Multi-Color Corp. North American Wine and Spirits, Napa, CA, earns the top spot in the annual awards competition presented by the Tag and Label Mfrs. Institute (TLMI). The announcement came during the association’s annual meeting October 16-19, at The Breakers, Palm Beach, FL.

More than 225 entries were received for this year's competition. The Awards Competition aims to stimulate innovative printing and to recognize technical achievement in all areas of the narrow web industry, including tags and labels, cartons, flexible packaging, non-woven pressure-sensitives, and more.

Entries are judged in six classes:

  • Digital
  • Offset - Wine & Spirits
  • Flexography & Letterpress
  • Multi-Process
  • Flexography - Wine & Spirits
  • Other

 

Best of Show and Best of Class: Flexo Wine & Spirits

 

Entered in the Flexo Wine & Spirits class, the Girl & Dragon Malbec wine label is produced roll to roll and requires a number of processes, which Multi-Color is able to accomplish in-line. They include flexographic and rotary screen printing, hot stamping, varnishing, die-cutting, foiling, and sculpted rotary embossing. Registration is critical and challenging. The label is printed HD flexo with CMYK and spot colors on a Gallus EM280 press.

Additional suppliers include DuPont plates, Gallus Screeny screens, Rotometrics cylinders, and Harper anilox rolls. Ikela supplies the dies, Fasson the cast gloss substrate, and Seigwerk the inks and coatings.

 

 

Best of Class: Digital

  • Precision wine label
  • Category: Wine & Spirits—Digital Printing/Toner–Color Process Prime

 

Multi-Color’s Sonoma Div. takes top honors in the Digital class for the Precision wine label, a new brand and new design. The label is printed roll to roll on an HP Indigo 6600 press. Off-line processes include hot stamping, varnishing, stripping, die-cutting, foiling, and embossing.

The converter says particular challenges include applying everything to a 70# Felt paper from Avery. "The paper texture can impact the printing, foiling, and spot varnishing. The designer worked closely with Multi-Color’s production team. To get the embossing look, a carefully embossed brass die is used. It results in a great interplay with the copper foil stamping. The spot gloss varnish over the word 'Precision' and over selective gray circle areas also adds a special touch. The two-piece die-cut angle makes things more challenging on the die-cutting operator. Lastly, the registration between all elements (die-cutting, printing, embossing, foiling, and spot varnishing) is critical and a lot to monitor. The end result is a novel design that hit the 'precision' target the winery and designer hoped for."

Best of Class: Other

  • Aloe H2O organic beverage
  • Category: ROLL TO ROLL - Color Process – Prime

 

Inovar Packaging takes the top prize in the Other class with a beverage label for Aloe H2O. Not only did the converter produce a beautiful label, their recommendations to the client helped drive up sales. The converter reports, "The client was using clear shrink, and the shape of the bottle was trapping air bubbles, ultimately detracting from the product image. By having them switch to white shrink, it fixed those problems by hiding the air, making the brand image more desirable on the shelf."

The label is printed on a Nilpeter flexo press with in-ine varnishing. Additional suppliers include Rotometrics cylinders, Harper anilox rolls, Bonset substrate, and Actega inks and coatings.

 

 

Best of Class: Offset Wine & Spirits

 

Multi-Color comes up big again with its Hertelendy wine label entered in the Offset Wine & Spirits class. Printed roll to roll on Fasson 70# Bright White Felt substrate on a Gallus TCS 250 semi-rotary press, challenges include hot foil stamping and sculpted flat embossing. Varnishing and die-cutting also are done in-line. Additional suppliers include AGFA plates, Universal Engraving dies, and Seigwerk inks and coatings. Harper anilox rolls are used for varnishing.

 

 

Best of Class: Flexo & Letterpress

  • Yerecic Label, New Kensington, PA
  • Pub Style Burgers food packaging label
  • Category: Flexography—Color Process—Prime

 

Yerecic Label uses a Mark Andy 4150 flexographic press to produce the Pub Style Burgers label, a winner in the Flexo & Letterpress class. Printed roll to roll with DuPont Cyrel 200 lpi plates and Harper anilox rolls, inline processes include varnishing, stripping, and die-cutting. The converter describes the challenges: “Our press operators are taught to maintain clear crisp print throughout the production run. Achieving the customer’s desired craft look in the text area while maintaining an eye-catching image in the burger had our operator questioning his print. Couple that with the desired die-cut that was requested, having the burger come out of the label; giving the press operator a lot of areas to keep an eye on.”

Additional suppliers include Rotometics cylinders and dies, Raflatac substrate, Flint inks, and ACPO lamination.

 

 

Best of Class: Multi-Process

 

McDowell Label & Screen Printing takes the top award in the Multi-Process class for the Get Real health and beauty label. It's produced on a Gallus press with DuPont plates, 200 line screen. Rotometrics supplies the cylinders and dies, while anilox rolls come from Harper. Klockner supplies the substrate, and inks and coatings are Actega WIT. Rotary screen and flexo printing are done In-line, as is doming and foiling.
