- Published: October 15, 2014, By Claudia Hine
The Tag and Label Mfrs. Inst., Gloucester, MA, presented awards in its competition during its annual meeting October 14 at the St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point, CA. The competition recognizes and honors the finest efforts of its converter members through the previous 12-month period. There are competition divisions for both North American members and international members.
The most outstanding category entries in six classes—Digital, Flexography & Letterpress, Multi-Process, Flexography–Wine & Spirits, Offset–Wine & Spirits, and All Other (including Screen & Gravure)—win Best of Class Awards, with one winning label chosen for the Best of Show award.
Following are the winners of the North American division. Visit TLMI for a complete list.
Collotype Labels USA Inc., Napa, CA, earns the prestigious Best of Show award for its Girl & Dragon, 2013 Malbec Argentina wine label. This label came out on top of the Flexography & Letterpress–Wine & Spirits–Line & Screen/Tone–Prime category.
Printed on a Gallus EM280 press with DuPont Cyrel FAST plates and Siegwerk inks and coatings, the label was produced with hot stamping, varnishing, die-cutting, foiling, and embossing all done in-line.
Additional suppliers include Kocher & Beck (cylinders), Harper Corp. of America (anilox rolls), and Ikela (dies).
Best of Class–Digital
Collotype Labels Digital Dept., Sonoma, CA, takes Best of Class for its Freakshow, 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon wine label. This label was submitted in the Digital–Wine & Spirits–Color Process Prime category and printed in-line on an HP Indigo press and off-line on an AB Graphic flexo press.
Other off-line processes include flatbed letterpress, hot stamping, varnishing, stripping, die-cutting, foiling, and embossing.
The converter reports the label was challenging as the client wanted colors to depict their vision of a circus. Additionally, the unusually large size required increased precision over a larger surface area. The high number of processes required to register also presented challenges.
Additional suppliers include Metal Magic and KC Photo Engraving (plates), Harper (anilox rolls), Kocher & Beck (dies), Avery (substrates and adhesives), and Siegwerk (coatings).
Best of Class–Offset–Wine & Spirits
Collotype Labels USA snagged another the Best of Class award for its Pacific Rim Mystic Blend, 2013 Riesling wine label. This entry was in the Offset–Wine & Spirits–Color Process–Prime category and printed on a Gallus TCS 250 press with Agfa plates and Siegwerk inks and coatings on a 70# bright white felt substrate.
The converter describes the following challenges: pearl hot stamping, 20-micron offset stochastic CMYK screening overprinting pearl foil, rotary silkscreen gloss, and sculpted flatbed embossing.
Additional suppliers include Harper (anilox rolls for coating) and Universal Engraving (dies).
Best of Class–Multi-Process
ASL Print FX Ltd., Vaughan, ON, Canada, takes best of class for the Sunny & Share Citrus Saison beer label, entered in the Multi-Process–Roll to Roll–Color Process–Prime category. The clear BOPP label was printed UV flexo on a Gallus RCS 330 press with 0.045 Kodak NX plates.
In-line processes include rotary screen, flexography, lamination, vignettes, varnishing, stripping, and die-cutting with off-line hot stamping.
The converter cites extremely tight registration to silk screen print with color consistency as challenging.
Best of Class–Other
Hammer Packaging Corp., West Henrietta, NY, wins in the Other class with the Drink Blocks entry in the Offset–Color Process–Prime category.
This label is used in the beverage industry for naturally flavored water for kids and collectible learning blocks. This entry is UV printed on a Muller Martini press with Kodak plates and Fasson substrates.
Best of Class–Flexography & Letterpress
TVC Label, Lewisville, TX, earns best of class for the Goliad Brewing Co. Redfish IPA, a microbrewery bottle label. Entered in the Flexography–Color Process–Prime category, the label was printed in-line on a Nilpeter press with DuPont plates and Zeller Gmellin inks and coatings.
Designed and printed for a new microbrewery, the startup wanted a matte look that had a classic feel. The converter used a substrate from Fasson North America.
Additional suppliers include Rotometrics (cylinders), Harper (anilox rolls), and Electro Optics (dies).
