TLMI Names Environmental Winners

GLOUCESTER, MA | At its recent Annual Meeting in San Antonio, TX, the Tag & Label Mfrs. Institute (TLMI) handed out Environmental Leadership Awards to Avery Dennison, Mentor, OH, and The Label Printers, Aurora, IL. 
The award recognizes TLMI member companies that have consistently demonstrated a commitment to progressive environmental practices across a range of areas including solid waste reduction, recycling, waste or energy recovery, the implementation of new “clean” technology and/or processes, and the implementation of an education program.
Calvin Frost, TLMI Environmental Committee chair, says, “This is TLMI’s 11th year in presenting these awards and recognizing leaders in the implementation of environmental awareness and best sustainability practices in our industry. Sustainability is a central issue in our marketplace, and I applaud all the companies who submitted award entries for consideration this year. Avery Dennison and The Label Printers have demonstrated ongoing leadership and excellence in environmental stewardship, and I congratulate them both.”
The Converter Award for Environmental Leadership was given to The Label Printers, a company that TLMI says continues to build an environmental culture throughout its entire organization. This is the company’s second year in winning the award and once again demonstrating a reduction in waste and energy consumption year over year. Reportedly, the company has also established best practices that demonstrate an ongoing commitment to sustainability, including a “Go Green Save Green and Earn Green” program.
The Supplier Award for Environmental Leadership was given to Avery Dennison, a company TLMI says has made excellence in environmental stewardship a highest priority throughout its entire supply chain. The company has improved material efficiencies by 24% since 2011 by utilizing Kaizen practices and has a corporate goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2015. Avery has also been a leader in responding to the issues of recycling PET products that contain p-s labels and has developed a non-PVC product line that contains zero chlorine, TLMI reports.
Both of the winning companies have achieved TLMI L.I.F.E. (Label Initiative for the Environment) Certification, said to be the only certification program tailored to the narrow web label and packaging industry.
