SHENZHEN, CHINA, and YORK, PA | Wood & Associates International Ltd. (W&A Intl.), optical microstructure specialists, reports it has secured several undisclosed new contracts in China for its nascent Dragonfly microlithography origination technology. Dragonfly is a large-format development from the Firefly system aimed at the security market.
The company, which also specializes in advanced OVF nanotechnology, will be supplying its Dragonfly system after pre-production trials proved successful at a major holographic manufacturer in India. Reportedly, these latest orders reflect the China-based company’s strategy of investing in new technology to meet the packaging and converting sectors’ demand for innovative technologies, which add value to their own product offering.
Dragonfly is a state-of-the-art, high-speed microlithography origination system that is powered by a dedicated, multi-core, high-end computer and LINUX controlled operating system that has been specifically tailored to perform calculations and control tasks. The system takes advantage of project management software that utilizes image files uploaded in standard bitmap tiff, jpg, png, and bmp formats to create projects.
Its digital capacity enables images to be created that can then be converted directly into laminates or foils for application straight onto folding cartons. (Laminates are currently the vehicle of choice, but an increasing trend towards the use of foil, both hot and cold, is expected to further boost Dragonfly’s future potential and uptake, says the company.)
Dr. Glenn Wood, president and CEO of W&A Intl., says brand owners and designers are seeing the value of microlithography origination technology’s ability to provide innovative packaging that delivers enhanced retail shelf appeal. “We have responded to the industry’s craving for innovation. Our customers demand highly original packaging to boost their return on investment and enhance their market shares in extremely competitive global markets. We have a system capable of mastering up to one meter by one meter quickly, which is now being offered in China where several systems have been ordered for delivery in 2018.”
Company says the market for large-format optical device folding carton packaging market is estimated to be worth in excess of US $100bn by 2020 and one of the largest, and fastest growing market geographical sectors will be China, which is leading the way in uptake.
Wood adds, “We hope that where China leads, the West will follow as brand owners and the printing and converting industries that serve them, see the value and benefits on offer. However, our current focus on China will see us investing in a new showroom and innovation center in PR China in early 2018, but we will of course support any technology sales to the Americas or Western Europe that occur.”
