The World Leader in Pouch Making Machinery
- Published: January 17, 2025
For over half a century, Totani Corporation has manufactured pouch and bag making machinery. Since its incorporation in 1961, over 6,000 Totani machines have been installed in more than 60 countries across the globe. These machines are highly regarded and trusted by well-established packaging companies.
Totani is widely recognized as THE world leader in pouch making machinery. Through the robust design, reliability and safety, Totani has developed a strong reputation throughout the packaging industry. In addition, Totani always has an eye on future needs, like packaging sustainability and automation. Totani has reacted quickly to these industry needs by investing heavily in R&D related to converting sustainable films structures and automating set-up and process control.
Many of these newly developed sustainable structures have a narrow sealing window and have lesser repeat control under heating conditions. By utilizing numerous heating stations, less heat can be used to seal which helps to negate these issues. Totani has also implemented technologies such as ultrasonic sealing and zone heating to target difficult to seal areas on the pouch. This all allows for pouches with these materials to convert at similar rates and efficiencies to that of traditional laminations.
The efficiency, in particular, is bolstered by newly integrated automated processing and set-up control systems. Now recipes can not only be saved, but when recalled, the position of units in the machine is automatically reregistered to it’s saved location. This is critical to decreasing set-up times and lessening the pressure on the machine operator. These motorized units also have the ability to readjust their position while the machine is running to keep up with any repeat variation and ensure precise sealing.
Outside of machine improvements, Totani’s head office building in Kyoto, Japan, was built with a focus on the “reduction of environmental impact”. Solar power, rainwater collection, a strict focus on recycling manufacturing waste and a “green” parking lot are just a few of the many considerations that been made. Totani has truly embraced these goals and has a newly adopted slogan; “Think Sustainable, Think Totani”.
Totani has also recently released a new machine model; the CT-40D. This high-speed machine uses a single web to create a plowed in bottom stand up pouch. Using proven technology, Totani created a machine to fit the growing narrow web market used in both digital and flexo printing. Its compact design and customizable components allow for the flexibility to convert a wide portfolio of pouches without losing productivity. There are also quick-change technologies that can be adapted to this machine, and others, that significantly reduce changeover times.
