Mactac Debuts All-Temperature Adhesive

STOW, OH | Mactac Performance Adhesives Group has launched the first products in its all-temperature CHILL AT hot melt adhesive product line. The new adhesive was custom-engineered for any temperature label application—including challenging cold temperature applications. Company says that while most pressure-sensitive adhesives take longer to bond in cold temperature conditions, the hot-melt CHILL AT adheres extremely well between temperatures of 20–40 deg F, in addition to room temperature

“With an exceptionally versatile temperature range of minus 65 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit, CHILL AT was designed to stick quickly and stay in place as needed to meet the demands of virtually any temperature application,” says Kathy Magyar, senior marketing manager, Mactac Performance Adhesives. “Because of its high-performing attributes, CHILL AT is an ideal off-the-shelf, all-in-one product for a wide variety of label applications.”

From food and beverage packaging to short-term shipping applications, CHILL AT adheres well to low-surface energy substrates such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene, polypropylene, paper, and corrugate.

It is currently available in the following constructions:

  • Platinum Bright Semi-Gloss (SGL7802): This 55# brilliant white semi-gloss coated litho sheet reportedly features outstanding ink receptivity and high internal strength characteristics for high-speed printing and converting. Also said to provide exceptional smoothness, whiteness, gloss and opacity. In addition to the CHILL AT adhesive, it is paired with a 2.4-mil super calendered Kraft liner and is called ideal for high quality prime labeling applications for food packaging and cold, damp substrate markets.
  • Bright Silver Metallized Paper (SMP7802): Featuring a mirror finish, this paper also features a 2.4-mil super calendered Kraft liner along with the CHILL AT adhesive. It is acrylic top-coated for high quality printing with flexo inks and is designed for labeling applications that require a deluxe appearance of metallized paper and an all-temperature adhesive. Company says it is ideal for food packaging and other cold, damp substrate markets.
  • Vivid 2 White Polypropylene Film (PJ7802): This white, top-coated pearlescent 2.6-mil PP (Label-Lyte) is a semi-conformable film designed for excellent printing, converting, and label dispensing. Featuring the quick-tack CHILL AT permanent adhesive and a 2.4-mil semi-bleached super calendered Kraft liner, it is recommended for prime labeling applications that require the durability and esthetics of film, such as semi-rigid and rigid containers. It is intended for food packaging and other cold, damp substrate markets.
  • Top-Coated Direct Thermal Paper (DTW7802): With medium sensitivity, this paper stock touts exceptional environmental resistance to plasticizers and is intended for use in standard speed thermal printers. In addition to the CHILL AT adhesive, it features a 2.4-mil semi-bleached, super calendered Kraft liner that is said to be excellent for die-cutting and stripping. The liner release system is designed for high-speed converting. It is ideal for barcode and human-readable labels in meat packaging, deli weigh scale, bakery label, or short-term shipping label applications that require a cold-temperature adhesive as well as environmental resistance to plasticizers, heat, and humidity.
