MACtac Reports Approvals for Chemical Drum Labelstocks
- Published: December 01, 2014
STOW, OH | MACtac Performance Adhesives Group has expanded its portfolio of chemical drum label certifications by achieving British Standard (BS) 5609 Section 3 compliance for PJ6914 and FDD6919 labelstock materials used in conjunction with the EDGE 850 digital label printer and toner from iSys Label. Company says this compliance helps customers comply with the new Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals.
GHS is a system that has been created by the United Nations for standardizing the classification and labeling of chemicals throughout the world. Under the GHS format, labels will include signal words, pictograms, and hazard and precautionary statements. Drums and containers used to transport petroleum, paint, liquid and powder chemicals must include labels designed to meet extreme conditions, identify the content of the drum, and give proper warning and safety instructions that remain legible for many years.
“Chemical manufacturers have until June 2015 to fully comply with OSHA’s updated Hazard Communication regulation for printing hazardous chemical labels,” says Kim Hensley, product manager, MACtac Performance Adhesives Group. “As the GHS mandate draws closer, it is critical to be prepared to meet the deadline. MACtac is committed to staying ahead of these changes to continue providing our customers with trusted products that meet the latest industry regulations.”
In order to comply with new GHS standardization, MACtac has proven that iSys Label's EDGE 850 digital label printer and toner can be used with FDD6919 2-mil matte white polyester/MP690 adhesive and PJ6914 2.6-mil gloss white BOPP/MP690 adhesive labelstocks to achieve standards compliance. Testing for BS5609 Section 2 and Section 3 has been completed.
MACtac also announces that the Adhesives Group has received New BS 5609 Label Certifications for polyester labelstock. Company says FCD6914 labels with durable, aggressive acrylic adhesive offer chemical and solvent resistance for chemical containers. In partnership with DNP, MACtac has received BS 5609 Section 2 and Section 3 label certification for MACtac FCD6914 2-mil white PET when printed with DNP R300 Black Resin and DNP R510 Red Resin Ribbon.
Hensley says, “Through a joint effort, it’s easy to address the requirements of BS 5609 knowing the full solution—including the label base material, pressure-sensitive adhesive and thermal printing—all together pass the standard.”
BS 5609 label certification is a specification for the durability of labels on chemical containers when being transported by merchant shipping. The labels and markings on containers shipped or stored in these marine environments must meet standards for adhesion, resistance to abrasion, and print permanence.
MACtac’s FCD6914 product is 2-mil gloss topcoated, white polyester with a durable and aggressive permanent acrylic adhesive and a 3.2 SCK liner. Coated with MP690 adhesive—a high-performance, high-tack, durable permanent acrylic emulsion said to offer excellent adhesion and mandrel hold—it offers chemical and solvent resistance to various high- and low-energy substrates. Applications include nameplate, durable equipment, and drum labels designed to convey critical warnings and instructional information.
