Converted Flex-Pack to Grow

CLEVELAND, OH—Demand for converted flexible packaging is expected to increase more than 4%/yr to $14.4 billion in 2009, says a new study from The Freedonia Group. According to Converted Flexible Packaging, this growth will come from cost, performance, and source reduction advantages over most forms of rigid packaging. Heightened barrier requirements in many markets will drive increased demand for value-added materials to enhance shelf life or product protection.

Contributing to growth will be technological advances such as breathable films and resealable stand-up pouches, as well as demands by manufacturers for higher performance packaging with enhanced graphics capabilities. Pouches will offer the best opportunities, the study says, with demand expected to rise 6.6%/annum to $5.8 billion in 2009.
