New Division Secretary
The PLACE Division of TAPPI has named Rory A. Wolf as the new secretary effective September 2004. Wolf is Director of Business Development with Enercon Industries Corporation. He has 24 years of experience in national and international sales and marketing management in the packaging industry. His experience includes polymer-based flexible packaging, surface treatment systems, corrugated, point-of-sale display, folding carton and electronic prepress industry segments.
Wolf earned his BBA degree from the University of Wisconsin and his MBA degree from Marquette University. He has published several technical papers and articles on atmospheric plasma. For the 2003 TAPPI PLACE Division Conference, he developed and chaired the “Converter Spotlight” and “Accelerating New Product Development And Supply Chain System Platforms” sessions. At the conference for 2004, he developed and chaired another “Converter Spotlight” session and one on “Brand Authentication.” Wolf also led the June 2004 Virtual Seminar entitled “Recommending Surface Activation Systems For Optimizing Adhesion To Polymers.
Active in the PLACE Division for many years, Wolf is currently the chair for the Marketing Committee of the division. He is also on the Executive Committee of the Decorating Division of the Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE).
Wolf joined the following division officers who began terms in September 2004: Ginger P. Cushing of Mica Corp., Chair; Scott B. Marks of Dupont Packaging and Industrial Polymers, First Vice Chair; David G. Timm of Charter Films, Second Vice Chair and Conference Chairman; and Jeffrey J. Wooster of Dow Chemical Co., Chair Emeritus.
“the PLACE” Has 4th Anniversary
In 2000, the PLACE Division of TAPPI began a cooperative endeavor with “Paper, Film and Foil CONVERTER” magazine to promote each other to their respective audiences. The intention was to provide more practical information to everyone in the converting and packaging industries. The initial insertion of the section called “the PLACE” in the September 2000 issue of Paper, Film and Foil CONVERTER (PFFC) was the official beginning of the joint effort. The September 2004 insertion of “the PLACE” therefore marked the fourth anniversary of the cooperative program.
Each publication of “the PLACE” provides information about the activities of the PLACE Division and its committees. This includes specific details about conferences, seminars, short courses, test method approvals, and other actions. Reading the articles in the initial section of “the PLACE” gives all the latest information about the division and TAPPI.
Perhaps the most popular item in “the PLACE” is the expanded summary of peer-reviewed technical papers covering areas of interest to those in the converting and packaging industries. Reading the summary will provide a quick glimpse into the content of the full paper. Readers requiring additional information can access the complete paper on the TAPPI web site. “the PLACE” is also an excellent place for authors to publish original papers concerning topics of interest to those in the fields of polymers, laminations, adhesives, coatings, and extrusion.
A newer cooperative effort between TAPPI and the publisher of PFFC is ePLACE. This began in January 2004 and is an electronic newsletter published every other Monday. To receive this newsletter, subscribe on-line at www.tappi.org by clicking newsletters under the People heading.
Technical Program Committee Expands
For its annual conference in 2005, the leadership of the Technical Program Committee will expand to three officers. Acting as co-chairs for the 2005 TAPPI PLACE Conference will be Beth M. Wells of Black Clawson Converting Machinery Inc. and Warren Durling of Glad Manufacturing. Both held the same positions for the 2004 conference and were very instrumental in the success of that meeting. Joining them next year will be Cheryl J. Wilson of Ingenia Polymers as secretary. All three officers will work closely with the TAPPI staff.
The Technical Program Committee comprises all those volunteers who are developing sessions for the next meeting. A primary task of everyone on the committee is to ensure that the next conference addresses the hot topics requested by attendees at the previous meeting. This is the basic way that the conferences sponsored by the PLACE Division are always on the cutting edge of the information desired by those working in the converting and packaging industries.
The Technical Program Committee schedules meetings throughout the year once each month. The group generally meets during a teleconference with one face-to-face meeting a few months before the actual conference. After they have identified all the topics for sessions, they are responsible for making certain that authors provide abstracts and final manuscripts for their presentations according to the necessary schedule. They also allot the times for the various sessions at the conference with special emphasis on avoiding conflicting times for topics that will be highly popular.
