Czech Carton Converter Model Obaly Upgrades with KBA Press

OPAVA, CZECH REPUBLIC—Model Obaly, a flexible packaging printer in Opava, continues to make improvements to its facility. The recent acquistion of a KBA Rapida 142 is part of the upgrade, reports Koenig & Bauer Aktiengesellschaft (KBA).

According to the mfr., the high-tech, heavy carton press line features six printing units and a coater, and also includes fully automatic plate changers, ink-temperature controls, a KBA Densitronic S color-measurement system, and a sheet-monitoring device.

Model Obaly made the decision to invest in the 56-in., 14,000 sph Rapida, says KBA, because of its high level of automation and the fact it can handle carton material weighing between 210 and 600 gsm (135386 lbs) and even corrugated. According to Model Oblay management, the converter conducted tests at its Opava facility to compare G- and F-flute as potential alternatives to flexo-printed products; the co. says the aim is to offer brand manufacturers high-quality, multifunctional packaging at a more economical price.

"Thanks to the [machine's] extensive automation," says Obaly production manager Jiri Matysek, "we were soon able to [utilize] its full potential. The service provided by KBA [has] enabled us to attain a standard of quality and productivity that previously would have been unthinkable." Equipment upgrades in prepress, press, and finishing have made Model Obaly a premier packaging producer for the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, glass, ceramic, and electrical industries in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and Germany, says the co.
